The 100 chess games featured in this volume are Mikhail Botvinnik's own choices as the best chess games he played before becoming World Champion in 1948.
They range from his first major tournament - the 1927 USSR Championship, in which Botvinnik, 16, became a teacher - to the Groningen International Tournament in 1946, where he demonstrated his abilities to win the world championship.
Botvinnik, an expert analyst and champion, had scored these games himself, giving a full exposition of his strategy and techniques against leading chess players such as Alekhine, Capablanca, Euwe, Keres, Reshevsky, Smyslov, Tartakower, Vidmar, and many others.
In a foreword, he talks about his career, his method of play, and the training system he has adopted for tournament practice.
A careful study of these 100 games should be rewarding for anyone interested in modern chess. This volume also includes a long article on the development of chess in Russia, in which Botvinnik discusses Tchigorin, Alekhine, and his influence on the Soviet chess school; the author's six studies on final positions; and Botvinnik's record in tournaments and games until 1948.
